AniMat’s wacky animated feature The Cast: Stupid Old Death Bear (2022)
Story
Four children make a mysterious discovery on their home planet that lands them lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Jude Law stars in Skeleton Crew; and more stars from a galaxy far, far away. The holographic circus that entertains Neel’s young siblings is the same Chewbacca family watch from the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special (1978). While Skeleton Crew is aimed at kids to appeal to a new generation of Star Wars fans, it surprisingly appeals to older audiences as well. In this Star Wars episode, four kids discover a starship buried in the forest of Atten, a peaceful and prosperous planet hidden in a galaxy full of pirates, greed, and chaos.
Luckily, there’s a misfit droid on board to help guide them
Dreaming of adventure—or at least some of them—the kids accidentally activate the ship and get lost on the far side of the galaxy. But because the kids have lived a sheltered life, they often get into trouble. While it’s definitely Star Wars, Skeleton Crew feels like an 80s kid’s adventure movie—think The Goonies, but set in space. For longtime fans, it’s full of nostalgic touches—from the equipment and spaceships to the alien creatures—all reminiscent of the original trilogy. Die-hard fans will also enjoy the many Easter eggs sprinkled throughout that hark back to the franchise’s early days.
The young cast, while less experienced, do a decent job
I especially enjoyed seeing younger versions of the various alien species we know from previous films. It makes the galaxy feel more connected, showing that some alien races are permanent rather than one-offs. There are also some fun cameos, like a brief glimpse of a boy who looks like a young Kylo Ren. These little things keep you hooked and make you want to see more. The biggest star of the cast, Jude Law, doesn’t show up until the end of the second episode, so it’s hard to judge the overall quality of the acting early on.
The production quality is top-notch
Two of the main kids stand out, reminiscent of classics like The Goonies or Stand by Me. One of the four kids is a non-human alien, so it’s hard to judge their acting, and another wears a cybernetic shield that hides most of their facial expressions, reminiscent of Geordi La Forge from Star Trek. – a notch, clearly showing Disney’s budget. The special effects are impeccable, so there’s nothing to criticize. But the episodes are quite short, and the long credits — over five minutes long — seem like too much.
Despite these concerns, Skeleton Crew was a pleasant surprise
I worry that with only eight episodes per season, the story might not be able to keep up unless the pace picks up significantly. It’s fun, nostalgic, and engaging for viewers of all ages. I’m excited to see where the story goes, and I’m glad it has something to offer even adult fans of the Star Wars universe.
