What is Back Pain?

Back pain is a medical condition characterized by sensations of soreness, pain and stiffness in the back of the body. This condition is divided into two types, namely acute and chronic. Acute back pain usually occurs suddenly and only lasts for a few weeks. Meanwhile, chronic back pain appears slowly and lasts more than 3 months. Back pain is generally not a serious problem and can heal on its own. However, this condition can interfere with daily activities so it needs to be treated appropriately.

Causes of Back Pain

Back pain can be caused by various things, ranging from injury, arthritis, osteoporosis, to posture disorders. Here’s the explanation:

1. Muscle or Spinal Injury

The most common cause of back pain is muscle or spinal injury. This condition can be triggered by several things, such as being hit by a blunt object, lifting excessive heavy weights, or not warming up before exercising.

2. Osteoarthritis

Pain in the back, especially in the lower part, can also occur due to arthritis or osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis can damage the cartilage which acts as a cushion for joints in the body, including the spinal joints. If left untreated, osteoarthritis risks causing the spine to touch each other, which can cause pain in the back, especially when moving.

3. Osteoporosis

Bone loss (osteoporosis) is a decrease in bone density which causes brittle bones to crack and break easily. Osteoporosis that occurs in the spine will cause pain and stabbing in the back. Apart from that, osteoporosis can also result in a bent body posture (kyphosis).

4. Posture Disorders

The cause of back pain that often occurs in children and teenagers is posture disorders. Posture disorders are divided into 3 types, namely lordosis, kyphosis and scoliosis. Here’s the explanation:
Lordosis: a posture disorder that occurs because the lower spine (lumbar) curves forward excessively.
Kyphosis: is a spinal disorder characterized by the upper back curving backwards.
Scoliosis: a posture disorder in which the spine curves to the side like the letter C or S.

Risk Factors for Back Pain

Back pain can be experienced by anyone. However, there are a number of factors that can increase a person’s risk of experiencing back pain, including:

Age. The risk of back pain may increase with age due to degenerative factors.
Rarely doing physical activity causes the body’s muscles, including the back muscles, to become stiff and tense.
Obesity or overweight.
Excessive stress.
Suffering from certain diseases, such as osteoarthritis or cancer in the back area.
